Getting Started with the Claryx Metal Works Pro V2 Belt Grinder

Welcome to the exciting world of knifemaking! Unboxing, assembling, and starting your new Claryx Metal Works Pro v2 Belt Grinder is the first step in bringing your knifemaking dreams to life. Whether you have already purchased or are considering purchasing a Pro v2 Belt Grinder, this blog post will guide you through the process, with easytofollow instructions and helpful tips. So lets get started and get your knifemaking journey off to a great start!

We are taking as granted that youve already taken the first step in making your dreams of becoming a master knife maker come true by ordering a Pro V2 Belt Grinder. While waiting for it to be delivered to your doorstep, you will need to prepare some tools to open the wooden crate and assemble your machine.

Opening the crate

Make sure to prepare the following tools:

For opening the crate you will need:

  • Cutter Knife
  • Phillips Screwdriver or preferably a power screwdriver

Inside you will find a perfectly packaged machine that is almost fully assembled. The only part that you will have to assemble yourselves is the tracking mechanism arm and spring. As standard, the Pro v2 Belt grinder comes with a flat platen attachment and a fully adjustable work rest either with 210x100mm or 400x150mm work rest. A big variety of compatible attachments such as contact wheels, small wheels, radius platen, rotary platen and much more can be ordered separately, but we will cover these products in another post.

Tools needed for the assembly

A total of 6 bolts have to be tightened.

Tools Needed:

  • 5MM Allen Key

Now that you have all the tools you need to get your Pro v2 Belt Grinder up and running, let’s get started!

Assembly Process

First, take the machine and all the attachments out of the crate and place them on a stable surface. Unwrap all the attachments and put them aside for a moment. Rotate the Belt Grinder to horizontal position and secure it in place by tightening the knob for the vertical/horizontal adjustment. Next take the tracking assembly and tighten the 3 5mm allen key bolts on the side of the chassis. After that tighten the spring with 2 bolts on top of the grinder chassis.

Adding Attachments and accessories

After completing these simple steps all that is left is to slide your flat platen attachment in the top slot and your work rest in the bottom one and you are ready to put an abrasive belt on and start grinding. The Claryx Metal Works Pro v2 Belt Grinder is designed to work with 50x2000mm abrasive belts. Nevertheless, depending on the attachment, the machine can be used with shorter 2×72″ abrasive belts and even longer than 2000mm belts. Take a suitable abrasive belt and put it around all wheels. Tension it properly by pushing the tensioning handle down with the belt over the wheels and the chosen attachment. Pull the attachment towards you while keeping the tensioning arm down. Keep the attachment in place while tightening the tooling arm knobs. Voilà! You are ready to start your Grinder!

Getting the motor running

To get the motor running, first connect the plug to a suitable 220v socket. Next turn the Main switch on the side of the baseplate to the ON position. The red light on the right of the switch and green light in front should turn on. If the belt direction switch (front of the baseplate) is in the middle position, the belt should not move. If you want the belt to move forwards, put the direction switch to the right and for backwards – to the left. Get the belt running SLOWLY by rotating the potentiometer slightly clockwise.

Now that you have your Belt Grinder running, it´s time to track your belt!

Belt Tracking

If the abrasive belt does not remain centered on the wheel path while the belt is moving use the tracking adjustment to track the belt. Turn the knob CW to cause the belt to track to the left. Conversely turn the knob CCW to cause the belt to move to the right.

Ready to Grind!

That´s it! You are ready to start grinding! Just remember to always wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) to stay safe and healthy while you work.

Have fun and happy grinding!
